God Knows You By Name

On Sunday morning, February 1, 2003, many people sat stunned in silence and unbelief as they heard reports and saw the video of the breakup of the Space Shuttle Columbia during its re-entry into the earth’s atmosphere.  With the loss of the shuttle and its crew the entire nation was plunged into a state of mourning and grief.  Shortly after the mishap, President George W. Bush said, “The same Creator who names the stars also knows the names of the seven souls we mourn today.”

It is interesting to note that the Bible tells us that God does know us personally.  In the Gospel of John, Jesus says, “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me” (John 10:14).  The psalmist also shared the same thing when he said, Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name (Psalm 91:14).

Amid national and personal grief – which even continues to this day – our only hope comes from the author of hope the Lord Jesus himself.  The Bible tells us, “May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word” (II Thessalonians 2:16-17).  Norman Clayton expressed how important hope is when he wrote the Christian hymn, “My Hope is in the Lord.” Think about these words of this song:

1)   My hope is in the Lord / Who gave Himself for me / And paid the price of all my sin at Calvary.

2)    No merit of my own / His anger to suppress / My only hope is found in Jesus’ righteousness.

3)    And now for me He stands / Before the Father’s throne / He shows His wounded hands and names me as His own.

4)  His grace has planned it all / ’Tis mine but to believe / And recognize His work of love and Christ receive

Chorus:  For me He died / For me He lives / And everlasting life and light He freely gives.

Text Box: God Knows
Your NameAren’t you glad that God knows you by name and He provides the hope that you and all of us need from day to day?  And aren’t you glad that Jesus has made it possible, through faith, for you and others to know Him personally and live with Him eternally?   “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).  "Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God" (John 1:12-13).

Get Ready. Get Set. Give Thanks!

What if you woke up tomorrow with only the things in your possession that you thanked God for today?  If that were the case, what might you have to enjoy or share?  If you are honest with yourself, most likely you could count on one hand what you thanked God for yesterday and probably have some fingers left.  By human nature we are an ungrateful people.  We so easily fall into the rut of thinking that things will be much the same today as they were yesterday, so we get in the “lean back and relax” mode.  If it were not for the grace of God, we would be woefully lacking in many of the necessities of life.

Usually, the Thanksgiving season is the time of year when people express thanks in some manner.  It is good for us to give thanks.  The Bible helps express this importance when the Apostle Paul instructs people to give thanks.  Notice that along with thankfulness, joyfulness and prayer are also included.  He says, Be joyful alwayspray continuallygive thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus (I Thessalonians 5:16-18).   In another place he says, Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything” (Ephesians 5:20).  Look carefully at the qualifications for these three activities.

1)      Joyfulness is to constantly be a part of our lives

2)      Prayer should be made repeatedly

3)      Thanksgiving should be expressed in all situations

According to these verses the giving of thanks is not to be reserved for just one season of the year.  Thanks to God ought to overflow from our hearts and be expressed from our lips every day of the year.  Here are three questions to ask yourself as you work your way through the Thanksgiving season.

 1) Am I joyful always?

2) Do I Pray continually?

3) Do I Give thanks in all circumstances?

Giving thanks should be a daily activity.  Let’s make sure that the fruit of our lips express thanks to God and the actions of our hands and feet show our thankfulness to Him and to others.  Let’s not relegate the giving of thanks to Thanksgiving Day in November.  So, Get ready. Get set. Give thanks!  And – and give thanks again and again.

What is Christmas?

Think about that question.  What might your answer be?  For some people, Christmas is giving and receiving gifts.  For others, it is the bright colored lights, beautifully decorated trees, and the joyful sounds of the season.  Still others would explain Christmas as family get-togethers, laughter, and lots of great food.  Some might even say that Christmas is church programs and Jesus in a manger.  All of these are part of Christmas; however, Christmas is much more than that.

Christmas is explained in God’s Word when it says, “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men” (Titus 2:11).  Do you see it?  Christmas is the gift of salvation that comes to us through the person of Jesus Christ, all because of God’s wonderful grace.  The angels announced the coming of Jesus in a manger in Bethlehem.  However, the announcement recorded in John 3:16 reminds us that Jesus was God’s love-gift to us.  It says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Aren’t you glad that God, by His mercy and grace, is a giving God?  Aren’t you glad that He gave His only Son as a love-gift so that you and I might receive salvation by personal faith in Christ? “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).  God’s love gift is significant, but we need to make it ours.  How?  Simple.  Look at the instruction to us, “Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12).

The gift of Jesus is ours by believing in Him.  Don’t let Christmas pass and enter the New Year without experiencing God’s wonderful grace—Jesus Christ.  To know Him is life eternal.
